Wigram Skies resident at breaking point with trucks sell up and move to somewhere quieter. She wants Halswell Ward city councillor Anne Galloway and Wigram MP Megan Woods to be more proactive in stopping the trucks. Cr Galloway and Dr Woods will meet this Friday to discuss the issue. Dr Woods said yesterday the trucks are a real problem and it is a horrible situation for Ms Waites. And one with a disabled daughter says she will now have to sell up. Wanda Waites, who lives on the corner of Lodestar and Corsair Dr said “the trucks are driving me mad.” They wake her daughter Tara up at 5am every day of the week. Lady Wigram Retirement Village residents are also campaigning to stop the trucks, saying they get woken up at 4.30am. Ms Waites said she plans to

This should come as no surprise to Galloway and Woods – Western News has reported on this issue for some months, and the matter went international when rest home owner John Tooby was recorded having a go at his tenants over their campaign to stop the trucks. All Blacks captain drops in on school By Sophie Cornish PASSING A rugby ball won Hoon Hay School pupils the chance to meet All Blacks captain Kieran Read. The ‘pass the ball’ competition was an initiative set up by New Zealand Rugby during the British and Irish Lions Series in June. It was part of a wider education unit rolled out to year 1-8 pupils in more than 2400 schools across New Zealand about the Lions Series. Hoon Hay took on the challenge over the five weeks and every pupil in the school participated. Each day classes would go out and throw a rugby ball up and down the line, recording the class daily distance. Each class’ figures were combined and added to a whole school graph. After 25 days they had covered 468km. Sports co-ordinator Michelle Meaclem said it was really good to see the persistence from the pupils. “I entered in the competition but didn’t really expect us to win it, just more as a daily fitness promotion during the Lions

time with family and gorge himself on burgers from Burger Fuel, something the professional athlete doesn’t often get a chance to do. While at the school, Read signed some All Black’s merchandise which will be a prize in a raffle in the upcoming school fair on November 24.

AWARDS DELAY The Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board’s plan to develop an edible garden awards has been put on the back-burner. City council staff told the board preparation and resourcing for the awards would take more time than first anticipated. Staff recommended postponing the awards until autumn 2019. VISITOR INCREASE Ferrymead Heritage Park has seen admissions double after an experiment with reduced fees proved a great success. School holiday attendance in October was almost double the attendance at the same time last year. There has also been a big increase in the use of family passes resulting in a three times the number of families visiting the park. NEW TREES A detailed design of a plan that would see Linwood’s Griffiths Ave and Nicolas Drive intersection have new trees planted is under way by the city council. The property in front of the trees is owned by the city council. Staff will ensure that the tree is placed so it won’t be dropping leaves in the yard or blocking any sunlight or views into the park

Enthusiastic about promoting the status Hoon Hay’s Jan Fortune is a member of Zonta and is the chair of the team which runs the Canterbury Secondary Schools Zonta Awards. She is now 71 and has battled cancer, been an Australasian champion at archery and worked in the medical realm. She talks to Emily O’Connell Where did you grow up? I grew up in Auckland and lived there until I moved to Christchurch in 1982. We moved down to Christchurch for my husband’s job, he’s a medical photographer, so he came down here for a promotion. His job was at The Princess Margaret Hospital at the time but now it’s in the main hospital. What got you into volunteering? When I became qualified as a medical laboratory technologist in 1970, I wanted to go overseas. So I decided to volunteer in Papua New Guinea for two years. It was a great experience but there wasn’t as much work on as planned. Because of this,

I started up Girl Guides. I spent my afternoons teaching Guides to the local children and they were very enthusiastic. One day when I was doing a sponsored
walkathon, I saw a man collecting money in a Scout uniform. The next day I saw him again at the bank and I thought he looked quite nice. I was then introduced
to him at a party a few week’s later. Colin and I dated for a couple months and then got engaged. I was able to cut my trip short by nine months so I could

get married. In December 1971 I spent six weeks with him and his family in Sydney. We got married in January 1972 in Auckland and have been married now for 45 years. What were you doing before Zonta? I was a medical laboratory technologist professionally and I worked in the laboratory at the Christchurch Hospital. From there I changed profession and went into pharmaceutical and did hospital oncology drug sales. I did that for 20 years and I retired about five or six years ago and then I started volunteering at the shop at the hospital. I’m not very good at doing nothing. I then got bowel cancer so I took a year off while I had surgery and chemotherapy – which has fortunately got rid of it all. Currently I have a job two days a week at the hospital, which is a paid job, as the co-ordinator of the wayfinder volunteers who are out the front of the hospital. How did you get involved with Zonta? I got involved about 26 years ago. I was new to Christchurch and I always wanted to work in the community having been involved all my life.

of women and girls in the community I heard the group was a service club and worked particularly to promote the status of women and girls and that’s what I’m enthusiastic about. It’s also a way to meet other professional businesswomen so I joined Zonta. I’ve been with it ever since because I love it and I get a good satisfaction out of what we can achieve for other people. How did you get involved with the Zonta Sports Awards? The sports awards had started just before I joined. Vicki Buck approached Zonta with the idea. In those days, 26 years ago, girls never got any recognition for their achievement in sport. We thought it was a good suggestion and it fitted with our goal of trying to promote the status of girls. For five years it was just the girls and the boys had a separate awards night. And then the organisation which ran the boys awards fell through. School Sport Canterbury then asked if we’d consider combining the two and we said ‘oh yes alright’ and we’ve just continued. Although girls do get a lot more publicity than they used to – it’s still not as much as the boys do. So I’m quite passionate about getting them recognised for their amazing achievements. It blows your mind

what they’re achieving. What sports have you played? I was a New Zealand archery champion and then I went on to pistol shooting and they’re both ones which never get any recognition because they’re not very public sports so that’s another reason I think the Zonta Sports Awards are good. I was in my late 30s when I picked up archery and did well quite quickly. In the sports awards there is a category for the disabled and I’m passionate about that because once I had stopped shooting, Neroli Fairhall, the paraplegic Archer, came on
top. She went to the able-bodied Commonwealth Games with me as her assistant, and won the gold medal – which was terribly exciting. She needed me to fetch and carry the arrows and things. A couple years after that, she asked me to go with her to the World Paraplegic Games in England which was an amazing experience and made me very passionate about recognising disabled people in their sports and how massively they can achieve. The other category which is a passion for me in sport, other than sport in general, is the coach, referee

or administrator. They only get criticism when they get it wrong, but they don’t get any praise for when they get it right. What do you like the most about all your different roles? Just seeing the difference you can make. Like with the volunteering at the hospital, you can see the strain go off someone’s face when you tell them where to go for their appointment. My satisfaction is knowing our working is making a difference in somebody’s life. What do you like doing outside of work?
My relaxation is in craft. I didn’t have time to continue with it when I was doing pharmaceutical because I was travelling. I’ve always knitted, but I’ve taken up spinning and I’m renewing my interest in weaving. I’m with the Christchurch Guild of Weavers and Spinners, I’m currently the treasurer, which isn’t my forte but no one else would do it so I’m doing that. I get a lot of satisfaction mixing with other women. Do you have any children? We don’t have any children but we do have a dog and she’s very treasured. The dog’s named Briar and she’s an airedale terrier. We’ve only ever had airedale’s, we fell in love with out first one and Briar is our fifth. Briar’s nearly six-years-old. She’s a rehome so we’ve only had her for one year but she’s very much part of our family now and very loved. What’s your best piece of advice for women? Probably just to believe in themselves and their abilities and to believe they can make a difference in the world. Even if its in a small way, they can get that satisfaction, knowing what they do has made a difference to someone else’s life.

Hillmorton students put on show for young and old By Emily O’Connell HILLMORTON HIGH students have been entertaining audiences in Wigram and Halswell. The year 7 and 8 kapa haka group joined students from the school’s upland unit to perform for Summerset at Wigram Retirement Village residents. The orchestral group played at the Halswell Primary School assembly. The upland unit is a facility for disabled students with high to very high needs. Two students from the unit attend weekly exercise classes with the retirement village residents. The orchestral group, called The Mix, took out an award at the Christchurch Wind Festival. Some of the group’s members used to attend Halswell Primary. Hillmorton High teacher Eleanor Sim said the Halswell pupils loved the performance and joined in with the clapping and singing. She said thanked Cherise Jones, who teaches at both Halswell and Hillmorton High schools and conducts The Mix.

U-turn on ferry terminal bus stop plan By Sarla Donovan THE DIAMOND Harbour ferry terminal will retain two bus stops after a U-turn from the Lyttelton Port Company. But it’s not budging on a decision not to provide a dedicated pick-up/drop-off zone. The LPC has been under pressure from community groups over a move to reduce bus parking spaces Peter Davie from three to one and not provide a public drop-off zone, as part of its staff car park development on Jetty 2. LPC chief executive Peter Davie said last week he had “listened to the concerns expressed by the Diamond Harbour Community Association and the Banks Peninsula Community Board about the negative impact reducing the bus service to one stop would have on people using the ferry. We have decided to retain two bus stops so there is no change to the 28 bus service, while the 535 will pick up and drop off people wanting to catch the ferry from Norwich Quay.”

While they wouldn’t provide a dedicated pick-up/drop-off zone for private vehicles, LPC would “facilitate access” for people to drop off goods, had young children or who were physically impaired, Mr Davie said. “Regular users . . . can apply for a permit to enable them to be dropped off and picked up close to the ferry. People who are not regular users, but need close access to the ferry, can phone LPC security 24 hours a day, seven days a week to
arrange entry. As a secondary option people can contact Black Cat Cruises to facilitate access.” Banks Peninsula Community Board chairwoman Christine Wilson said the board was “delighted that LPC has revisited its plans.” Stairs onto the Oxford St overbridge are being re-installed, reducing the walking distance to the ferry. “The community has been asking us to re-install these stairs and we are pleased to
deliver this. We will undertake this work while we construct our staff car park for Waterfront House, LPC’s new operations and administration building. Developer to revisit complex plans By Sarla Donovan COMMUNITY concern over a shopping and entertainment complex in Church Bay has forced a rethink on how it will look. Spence Developments wants to build a supermarket and 111-space car park, four shops, a cafe and a 30-seat cinema at 139143 Marine Drive, behind the On the Spot store. The Church Bay Neighbourhood Association has expressed misgivings about whether the building would fit in to the semi-rural environment. Corrugated iron, timber or stone were suggested as alternatives to the proposed tilt-slab construction materials. Association secretary Pat Pritchett said they had been in touch with Spence Developments to give their feedback. She was pleased at the designs would now be revisited. “I hope they’re looking at not using tilt slab as part of that. It’s good to know they’ve listened to the community and I hope they continue to do so,” she said. Spence Developments was planning to lodge a resource
consent application with the city council this month but community reaction to the look and size of the development along with concerns over access points have led to the project being pushed back by a month. Development spokesman, planning consultant James Hook, said a “revised site plan and elevations” would be released in two weeks. He was still optimistic resource consent would be lodged before Christmas.

Billy, 7, broke his femur about three weeks ago after crashing his motor-cycle and has to be in a wheelchair until November 16. His mother Nicola said originally the Halswell family had bought tickets to the pool play match at AMI Stadium in the general stand. But they had to buy new tickets in the wheelchair seating area at the bottom of the City Care Stand so Billy could still go, she said. Ms Spivey, Billy and his three-year-old brother, Benji, sat together. Dad Hamish and some friends were also allowed to sit with them. Ms Spivey said it was “awesome” to sit there because it was close to the action. Billy’s Halswell Hornets gold team, which his dad coaches, won junior team of the year at the Canterbury rugby league awards. He was the second highest points scorer. 2 bunches Asparagus 1 Avocado 1 Lemon 1 Tbsp Extra virgin olive oil 1 Pepper 1⅓ cups Dried cranberries ½ cup Walnuts ¼ cup Parsley 1 to taste Salt & freshly ground pepper
1 whole butterflied chicken 1 to taste salt & freshly ground pepper Barbecue sauce Directions Preheat grill to medium. Get surface temperature to about 200 deg C. Clean and oil well. Clean the chicken if you desire and pat dry. Cut the backbone out of the chicken with sharp kitchen scissors. You could use a knife, but the scissors are much safer and work great. With a large knife, give the breastbone a large nick in the front of the chicken to help the bird lay flat. Rinse the inside of the bird out, trim any loose fat and extra skin. Pat dry again. Give the bird a good sprinkle of salt and pepper. You could use any seasoning you want here. Place skin down on the grill. Flip after you get a nice browning on the skin after about 12-15min.
Give the chicken a good brushing of barbecue sauce. Grill another 3-4min until the sauce is browning well.

To make the salsa, combine avocado, juice of the lemon, oil, diced pepper (yellow), dried cranberries, walnuts (toasted) and parsley. Season with salt and pepper and toss well. Cook asparagus in plenty of boiling, salted water for 2min or until just tender to the bite. Drain asparagus and arrange on a serving plate. Scatter salsa over asparagus to serve.
Total grilling on the second side should take 20-25min. Let set for 5 minutes then cut and serve.

News Huge turnout for bike show By Sophie Cornish THE SMASH Palace Bike Show took New Brighton by storm on Saturday. “It went really well, everyone had a ball,” said event organiser Jason Mill. Originally, 20 heats were planned for the demonstration but Mr Mill said on the day there was close to 60. Tony Hockley, 82, son of former bike enthusiast and founding member of the Pioneer Motorcycle Club Geoff Hockley, raced on the day. The event was linked to the late Mr Hockley, who was involved in the first ever bike races on New Brighton beach in the early 1900s. Event organisers had one lap planned for Tony, who ended up lining up for the next six races afterwards. “We couldn’t get him off the bike,” said Mr Mill. Between 3000-4000 spectators showed up and the seaside market said they had one of their busiest markets of the year, said Mr Mill. Originally the event was planned to be biennial, however, following feedback from spectators, Mr Mill thinks this may change. “The word I kept hearing was next year . . . if the community wants it, we will do it.”

School blaze and Guy Fawkes keep firefighters occupied By Mark Thomas – specialist fire investigator I’VE BEEN away from Christchurch for a couple of weeks. I missed the arson attack on Linwood North School on October 21. I’m mentioning it here because school fires are one of the most unsettling for communities to deal with. Students, teachers and parents often feel personally violated when their school is attacked in this way. In my experience and knowledge, it is very rare that school arsonists are old enough to vote.
In fact, often they are recent pupils themselves of the school concerned. It’s disturbing and sad that there are young people who can hate their teachers, peers and community enough to destroy the buildings that are the bricks and mortar of that school community. I hope the Linwood North arsonists are caught. If only to prevent a similar reoccurrence. Guy Fawkes will be over by the time this column is published. While things have improved from the wild west days of multiple fires and horrendous injuries, it mystifies firefighters why
full fire bans are the norm for very good reasons for 51 weeks of the year but are totally suspended for one week. All to somehow celebrate the murderous intent of a terrorist who was caught red-handed 500 years ago on the far side of the world. We are often called to rescue cats up trees.
